Karate Leadership for the group is essential, but more importantly Personal leadership is even more important.  Personal leadership is the way a person leads themselves from good to better to best.  The characteristics
of Karate Leadership is not self-evident and need to be taught.  The absence of knowledge of karate skills
and leadership skills weaken not only Karate as an art and  absence of Karate knowledge generally. The Karate Path needs  Karate Leadership that has high level karate skills and a high standard of teaching expertise.  That expertise must include a definite knowledge of where the teacher desires the students to go and become.  An understanding of how to get students to see and understand what the teacher desires for them without telling them, but showing them and teach by example as well as percept.

The lack of leadership in Karate insure that the students will be inferior in all ways.  Should the student/s have a lack of skillful leadership,  then it is imperative that the student learn and begin to exhibit Personal Leadership.  Personal leadership helps the student correct things that are said incorrectly.  When skills are performed poorly or incorrectly, the power of the mind, of one implementing personal leadership, can make a correction and overtime or immediately.  The greater the knowledge and understanding of karate and life the student has acquired will enhance the ability to utilize Personal Power derived thru Personal leadership to make correction in any situation.

Professional leadership is required when dealing with others, karate students, if positive results are the desired effect.  For the best progression in the students, karate instructors need to be knowledgeable, but knowledge may only be one of a number of attributes needed to be a successful.  If the Professional lacks an understanding of Personal Power and Personal Leadership and how to use both to lead the students, failure is insured.

Leadership demands the great leader possess at least some if not all the following characteristics plus others:

Accountable

Admirable

Balanced

Karate Instructors who know how to design their instructional programs and implement

the right amount of exercise in their classes are balanced.  Even better is when they can prescribe

workloads for away from class practice.  I believe the personal practice sessions need to enhance the

Karate-ka (karate student’s)  way of life.  Away from class practice could include partners.  Having a great partner is

critical in and out of classes.  The instructor can only show the way and lead some of your practice.

Great Students make Great Instructors.

Brave

Karate Instructors need to be brave enough to always do the right thing.  Obviously, the right thing may not be the same in different situations and may be different from one student to another student.  Encouraging a student with a lack of flexibility to increase their time doing stretching, but not a student that is very flexible may be better in a strengthening program.  Both could be encouraged to spent an equal time practicing karate skills.  Bravery certainly includes teaching the students to know where they stand and what they stand for both in karate and even more importantly in life.

Karate instructors should be brave enough to have an obvious level of humility.  Of course it would depend on how one defines humility.  In this instance it is not defined as one being in sackcloth and ashes.  It would rather be a sense of personal worth, and transferring that worth to add value to students lives even at personal sacrifice.  Boost the students to a higher level of performance and personal power and the instructor cannot help but to rise to a higher level of performance and personal power.  My definition of humility for the the world’s greatest teacher will be covered in another post.
