Saturday afternoon in 1999 while flipping channels it all began.
I was looking for something to watch for a short period of time, before leaving
home for my afternoon activities. The short period became my first women’s
basketball game.
Landing on Colorado State women’s basketball game the new fan decided to watch.
The commentators kept saying “Becky Hammon”, while giving no explanation. I had no idea who Becky Hammon was or was to become. Becky Hammon the commentators
say and I thought yea she is pretty good, but it is not worth talking about during the entire
game. Being a girl watcher, I thought she is cute but not worth talking about during the entire
game.
This pattern continues through-out the game until about 3 minutes left in the game.
The commentators then said “oh by the way for those that do not know why we have been
talking about Becky Hammon. She broke the all-time scoring record for the WAC conference”.
I thought that is neat for her, but it is not worth talking about during the entire game. Approximately
90 seconds before the game ended the commentators then said “not only did Becky Hammon
break scoring record for the women, she also broke the men’s record as well. I thought that is great
for her, but it is not worth talking about during the entire game. A fan was born.
Now in 2022 and thru years of watching and reading about Becky, the fan remains.
Even with the record-breaking performances, Becky was not drafted into the WNBA. I heard or read that
someone asked the New York Liberty why not consider the little girl from Colorado State. It was said “she never misses”. Obviously, she misses.
SHAYLEE GONZALES NAMED TO BECKY HAMMON AWARD MIDSEASON WATCH LIST
The New York Liberty gave her an opportunity. The opportunity becomes brutal. The big girls decide to get rid of the potential rookie. Rather than contend with them, when knocked down Becky just got up and played basketball. Playing basketball was the reason she was there. Such wisdom from someone so young. Apparently
she had been conditioned to rough play. She played with brothers that help pave the way. Thanks Brothers!
The way she handled adversity and the way she played basketball rewarded Becky. She won a spot on the New York Liberty roster. Later much later just may she enter the Hall of Fame.
